Book of the Month: Linchpin by Seth Godin
|

Book of the Month: Linchpin by Seth GodinWarning: This is not your typical Seth Godin marketing business book. Actually, you would probably find it in the Self Help section of your local bookstore if it were not written by THE most brilliant “business marketing” thought leaders of our time. In this book, I feel like I get a glimpse into the soul of Seth Goldin and his personal quest to be an “Artist.” Overview The concept behind Linchpin is that many people need to take ownership and become "indispensible". People become indispensible, regardless of their power or position, by the way they work. We need to view our work as “art.” Linchpin’s put “emotional labor” into their work. In this book, Seth is out to destroy the factory business model. He calls us all to become freelance artists that work in and outside companies. Regardless of where you work you need to be a Linchpin. Key concepts Work as Art – we all must strive to be artists. As factory jobs disappear and the economy that factory jobs were built upon crumbles, artists will rule the world. Art is “anything that’s creative, passionate and personal. An artist is someone who uses bravery, insight, creativity, and boldness to challenge the status quo.” Art is a gift you give. Your motivation should come from creating your art and giving it away. Follow your "art" - Art is not painting or poetry. Art is making a difference, leading, doing the thing no one thought of before, doing work that matters. The resistance would like you to believe that fitting in is what''s expected, safe, A day’s pay for a day’s work is dead – artists are passionate and their passion is contagious. The days of showing up and expecting a paycheck are over. Quit lying! If you quit pretending to work, your employer will quit pretending to pay you. Emotional labor – the hard work of being present, of being creative, of facing your fears, of labor, of speaking up and speaking your mind, the labor of fighting the “resistance.” "mediocre obedience" – large organizations today are not creating Linchpins they are creating “mediocre obedience.” Think of yourself as an artist, not a consumer. Do not settle of mediocrity in your work. Be passionate. Be an artist. Focus on "giving" - If you look at your work as art, your reward will come in the gift of giving your art. Focus on the giving and your rewards will be in doing your art and giving your gift. Do not covet. Do not be greedy. Be a giving artist. The Resistance - The Resistance is fear. It creates fear of what will happen to you if your ideas get out. The Resistance is characterized by procrastination and rationalization about why you cannot “ship.” The Resistance is everything in your mind telling you not to do what you want to do. Moving forward with an idea, suggesting a new way. The Resistance wants you to slide into complacency. The Resistances wants you to do busy work that prevents you from doing something remarkable. Recognize The Resistance holding you back from what you want to accomplish and focus on shipping. Fight the resistance – the idea of the resistance is taken from Steven Pressman’s blog on the topic The War of Art: Break Through the Blocks and Win Your Inner Creative Battles Shipping - Shipping is the giving of your gift of art. You must fight the resistance to ship and share your art with the world. Seth says the difference between himself and the rest of us is he has shipped 12 books. We maybe smarter than him or have better ideas, but he is who he is because he has overcome the resistance and shipped. Set a deadline and stick to it. Create a plan to hit your deadline. Brainstorm and thrash at the beginning of the project. The more work at the front of a project the more likely you are to ship on time. Conclusion Society rewards you for standing out, giving gifts, making connections, and being remarkable. Start being more remarkable. Ship your remarkable ideas. I highly recommend this book. We all must be more courageous and creative in our work. Tags: marketing Hits: 944 |
